AN independent brewery has made the "difficult" decision to close its taproom indefinitely.

The taproom at Malvern Hills Brewery opened its door in March after three years of work, but a recent medical issue has forced the owners to make the tough call to close.

The decision has also meant that there will be no brewing or delivering for the time being too.

Owners of the company, Frances Casey and Julian Hawthornwaite, made the announcement on social media and thanked people for their support.

A spokesperson for Malvern Hills Brewery said: "Folks, it's so difficult to write this.

"Julian hurt his back last Thursday, the doctor advised no heavy lifting whatsoever.

"Which means no brewing, delivering etc. This also affects our Tap Room, which will be closed indefinitely.

"Thank you for your unwavering support to Malvern Hills Brewery over the years, we could not have succeeded without you. Wishing you all the very best for 2023."

Customers have flooded the Facebook page with support for the brewery which has over 20 years of expertise in crafting beer.

One said: "So sorry to hear this.

"Sending all healing and positivity vibes I can muster. At times like these it’s ok to accept all reasonable offers of support. I have everything crossed things fall into place. Take care both."

Another added: "Sadly will just have to be patient and get fully recovered. We will all just have to drink more MHB beer when you are next open for business."

The taproom was designed to be a more intimate and closer drinking experience, and was a culmination of years of planning and work to renovate the West Malvern site.

With beers brewed next door, the taproom had a range of offerings including Black Pear Bitter, Olicana pale ale and Trevor's Stout, named after Trevor Marston, former landlord of the Brewers Arms, Malvern.

Originally planned back in 2019, Covid hit the progress of the taproom, with Mr Hawthornthwaite working round the clock to make sure everything was ready for its opening this year.

Malvern Hills Brewery was established in an old quarryman’s gunpowder store back in September 1998.
