THE acting headteacher of Hay-on-Wye Primary School says action will be taken after inspectors ruled the school’s performance to be ‘adequate’.

An Estyn report, compiled by the Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, has been published following an inspection of the school in September.

Hay primary, on Oxford Road, currently has 170 students aged three to 11 and a budget of £3,144 per pupil – one of the smallest school budgets in Powys.

Estyn inspectors said the school’s current performance was ‘adequate’, putting it in a category where strengths outweight areas in need of improvement.

Their report said most pupils achieve good standards in speaking and listening and the school’s values are at the core of pupils’ learning.

However, inspectors also said that a few pupils do not achieve as well as they could.

They said there are limited opportunities for most pupils to apply their skills in numeracy and in information and communication technology across the curriculum while teachers’ planning does not develop pupils’ skills progressively across all areas of the curriculum and the quality of teaching varies too much from class to class.

Stuart Fiddes, the recently appointed acting headteacher, said he has a vision for the school that focuses on improving pupil outcomes and wellbeing.

He added: “We’re pleased that good practices are being recognised in the report and an action plan has been put together to address the recommendations.”
