PEOPLE in Hay-on-Wye are celebrating after securing £286,800 of Lottery money to restore the town's historic Cheese Market.
Hay-on-Wye Community Interest Company (CIC), an organisation set up by a determined group of local residents and business people, will use the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) funding to restore the redundant market hall, turn the upper floor into a holiday flat and reopen the downstairs as a community space.
As there is no museum in Hay, the CIC is also hoping to create a “heritage interpretation area” inside the refurbished hall which would use a smartphone app alongside a more traditional trail walk to encourage visitors and residents to explore the border town’s history.
