The streets of Hereford are paved with gold. Well Broad Street is about to be.

The published cost of resurfacing Broad Street is £2.8 million.

Also, the published timetable to carry out the work is two years.

If the approach to resurfacing Widemarsh Street is carried out, then Broad Street will be closed for two years. All street parking, disabled parking, loading bays and taxi ranks will vanish for two years.

Closing this street will cause further congestion in Hereford at a time when it is proposed to start work on the Edgar Street Grid which in itself will cause complete disruption to Hereford’s traffic.

All this at a time when retail sales in the city are totally flat.

This Tory-controlled council wants to completely finish off Hereford city centre by increasing congestion and disrupting two parts of the city at the same time.

What is the priority for resurfacing Broad Street, especially over two years, and at such a cost?

When completed it will have minimal effect on increasing visitors to the city.

Would not improving vehicle access to the city and improving car parking in the centre increase numbers by a far greater percentage?
