I, LIKE the majority of people support anything which can help and assist people with disabilities.

However I cannot come to terms with the varying kerb heights in Widemarsh Street, Hereford.

I often see blind people with and without their guide dogs walking through High Town and other pedestrian areas in the city centre, one would presume without too much difficulty.

If the kerbing is so important, why wasn’t Commercial Road laid in the same manner a few months ago when the paving was re-laid?

Likewise, parts of the Maylord leading from Widemarsh Street have also been re-laid. Neither locations have raised kerbs.

For some council officer to say without further addition that the design was legal and reports no accidents involving the blind and disabled is naive to say the least. We expect the design to be legal but it does not mean that it’s the safest design.

Likewise, for one of our elected members to say that we need to take extra care until we get used to the new environment is speaking before his brain has engaged. Where is the council’s “duty of care”?

Hereford is a tourist city so as one of your previous letter writers said, tongue in cheek I hope, should the council put warning signs up?

While, like others, I think the design is a great improvement but more thought should have been put into the varying height kerbing.
