I am responding to Mr J Mitchell’s letter in Readers’ Times on January 1.

He states that he uses the outside lane to effectively go straight on at roundabouts. Rule 184 to 190 of the current Highway Code will clear up this common mistake. It states that the right hand lane is to be used for turning right (third exit or more) unless signs indicate otherwise. The example given by Mr Mitchell was the Holmer Road roundabout, one which I regularly use. If you apply the Highway Code the left hand lane is to be used for the first and second exits, whereas the right hand lane is to be used for the third exit.

I often feel I have been cut up by motorists using the right hand lane to effectively go straight on, but can understand why Mr Mitchell feels so upset by other motorists flashing their lights at him. The aggression I encounter on the roads on a daily basis is appalling. Surely we are all just trying to get somewhere and nobody is intentionally trying to drive us off the road? If we all just indicate clearly and calm down these things won’t matter so much.

Oh, and please stop using mobile phones while driving, no call is that important.
