AS chairman of Hereford Musical Theatre Company I wonder if I may highlight to your readers our forthcoming production at The Courtyard of the contemporary musical Thoroughly Modern Milly, which will open on Friday, October 24, and run until Saturday, November 1.

Thoroughly Modern Milly has never been performed by amateurs or professionals in Hereford and is a very lively all-singing-and-dancing comedy production, just the sort of show to guarantee to uplift the spirits of your readers during these depressed economic times. It also coincides with the 10th anniversary of The Courtyard and our own 110th anniversary as we were, of course, formerly the Hereford Amateur Operatic Society.

My main reason for writing is to highlight the high risk small amateur companies such as ourselves take when producing such a lavish show as Milly.

The total cost of the production will be in the region of £40,000, a staggering amount when one realises that even if we were to sell every ticket in the house over the 10 performances then we would just about break even. We therefore depend very heavily on local businesses and individuals to underwrite our shows with their generous sponsorship and donations. Ford Abbey Farms are our main sponsor for this particular production.

I would also like to highlight the enormous amount of time contributed to such shows by our dedicated members both on and off stage. More than 50 individuals will help in one way or another and of course give their time freely.

Can I therefore please urge your readers to give this ambitious amateur company their 100% support as we feel we offer a tremendous service to the local community. We guarantee to put a smile on your face in these dour economic times. Full details, prices etc can be obtained from The Courtyard on 01432 340555.
