THE Rev Dr R S Murrin’s observations about Hereford city eyesores (Readers’ Times, May 15) were accurate.

Visitors to Hereford must be left bemused at the unwelcome sights they receive when entering Hereford.

Some towns and cities have policies to promote their ‘gateway’ entrance points as welcoming, entertaining and informative, providing attractive points of arrivals.

At Ashford in Kent, all ‘gateway’ roundabouts have displays that make visitors feel cherished and special. One roundabout has a display of farming implements and sculptures highlighting the area as the Garden of England.

Another roundabout has a unique train engine sculpture decorated with flowers demonstrating the town’s historic railway connections. A World War I army tank at another junction highlights the town’s army association.

All of these ‘welcome gateways’ are well kept and designed with road safety in mind, yet provide a welcome to visitors that is often remarked upon.

Hereford could certainly do with a few innovative ideas to make the city as attractive as possible, not just for its many visitors, but also for the population who live and work here. A little thought and ingenuity would go a long way.
