WILL 2008 be the year for Herefordshire health services? Cut the Cancer Misery Miles' campaigners Allan and Angela Lloyd certainly hope so, with the news that a radiotherapy service could be provided for the county.

Backed by hundreds of letters from Hereford Times' readers the couple have fought long and hard to change a situation that's seen some cancer patients travelling many hours and miles for treatment in Cheltenham.

Now there are encouraging signs that the finances do stack up, that the need is certainly there and that - thanks to the anticipated Macmillan Renton Unit - a site will be available. Additionally, recent government guidelines emphasise that cancer patients should not have to travel more than 45 minutes for treatment.

One last fast and furious push is what's called for now so make your views known as loudly as possible. Contact htletters@herefordtimes.co.uk; comment at herefordtimes.com or write to Cut the Cancer Misery Miles, Hereford Times, Holmer Road, Hereford, HR4 9UJ.

But there are more reasons for hoping this will be the county's health year as the decision draws closer on how Herefordshire Council and the Primary Care Trust can work more effectively together.

The issues that surround how to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population require careful analysis and then sensible solutions. There are no easy answers, especially when budgets are stretched by our increasing expectations of them. A truly joined-up approach is the pragmatic way ahead - if the political anxieties can be allayed.
