WHILE waiting in traffic on the Greyfriars bridge in Hereford I noticed that the Wye Trow has been plucked from the River Wye, just a few weeks after it was put in its rightful place on the river.

I do hope that our council has not just shoved it back to Gloucester Docks and that the exercise of bringing it to Hereford was to appease public opinion.

The trow should not be used as short-term PR tool. Instead, it should be used as a training boat for sea cadets to learn to sail and also for disabled people to have the experience of sailing.

At least that was what we learned from Lady Darnley when the council publicised the launching on the Wye in the summer.

Instead of being in “close it down” mode or “ignore it and it’ll go away” mode, both we the public and the county and parish councils need to start promoting things and opening doors, before the county people vote with their feet and move to counties that welcome new ideas.
