NONE of the members of Gladestry WI, were quite sure what to expect when they made a behind the scenes visit to Tesco. The store was still open when they arrived and members were met by Jayne Griffiths, Tesco's community organiser for the store.

After walking through the large storage areas behind the shop, members were taken to a small room with a delicious buffet laid on.

Jayne made members very welcome with tea and coffee to go with the cheeses, grapes and a wide variety of excellent cakes. She then explained her full-time role in the community as part of Tesco's wider work.

Every evening at 7pm, all the on sell-by-date food is reduced in price. What's left by 8.30pm is offered to staff and the remainder goes to piggeries and for pet food. Other unsold produce is also available for community projects in the area - £92,000 was donated this year. The bag packers at the front of the store also raise £200-£900.

Jayne herself raises money through the store for other local community projects. She has organised a second-hand book-stand raising some £120 per week. This year's charities are the Diabetes Society, British Heart Foundation, and Cancer Research. Between May 8-13, Jayne will decorate the whole store in pink ribbon bows.

She also supports a local Leg Club, providing teas and coffees.

Jayne is a very busy woman, ensuring that Tesco, as an organisation, gives help and support to the local area.
