ASDA has been given the green light to make changes at its supermarket in Hereford, including a new click and collect point for customers ordering their shopping online.

The supermarket chain asked Herefordshire Council if it could install the new canopy in the car park of the store, off Belmont Road, and planners approved the scheme.

Asda also wanted to add a new loading bay at the rear of the shop for its home delivery vans.

A design and access statement submitted with the planning application to the council said the firm wanted an extension to the existing home shopping facility.

It wanted the canopy in its car park so it could create a drive through service for click and collect services.

At the rear, it wanted a new single-story canopy, similar to what's already there, for van loading.

Planning officer Gemma Webster said: "The proposed works are small in scale and would not be visible outside of the site due to the constrained nature of the development within the service yard.

"The proposed alterations would be undertaken using materials that match or that are consistent with the approach generally and as such would comply with the requirements of policies LD1 and SD1 of the Core strategy.

"It is the potential for noise and disturbance from the proposed use that needs careful consideration.

"The site already operates a home delivery service and this application would facilitate better working practices and ensure that staff are under cover when loading / unloading, along with the click and collect service.

"It would also facilitate working in a more practical way. This is very unlikely to cause any greater disturbance than the existing use."
