AN exhibition of work by Ben Nicholson will be opened by Lady Darnley, Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, at Monnow Valley Arts Centre in Walterstone on June 30 at 3pm.

The works for the exhibition have been borrowed from private collections, mostly the works that used to belong to Helen Sutherland, Nicholson’s first major patron who acquired more than 40 works from him from 1925. The earliest work in the exhibition, a portrait of Edie Nicholson, dates from about 1919, while the last dates from 1967.

Ben Nicholson’s approach to art was to value the strength of expression over accuracy of description. Like all good artists, drawing forms the basis of interpreting the experience of the world, and this exhibition looks at the role graphic art had in the development of Nicholson’s art. His drawings are characterised by strong, continuous lines which define form and space without a break.

Shading is used sparingly.

The exhibition will run until August 26, open Thursday and Friday 11am-5pm, weekends 2pm-5pm and other times by appointment.
