A YOUNG musician from Bromyard has scaled new heights by flying solo on his 16th birthday.
Andrew Spicer flew a Cessna light aircraft from Shobdon airfield on Monday with only himself for company.
Pilots can legally fly alone at 16 and Andrew waited five hours for conditions to improve before getting his birthday treat.
The teenager, from Stanford Bishop, has been learning to fly for two years with the help of instructor Justin Lavender. A Canadian pilot even gave him control of a seaplane over Fiji last Christmas with his mother and elder brother in the back.
Andrew – a pianist and trumpeter who studies at Shrewsbury School – chatted to himself and sang “happy birthday” during his maiden solo flight.
