THE newly opened Lion Street Gallery in Hay-on-Wye will be hosting a father and son exhibition of the celebrated Aneurin Jones and his son, Meirion next week.
Aneurin’s work has been the subject of a number of TV documentaries and has been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad.
He says: “I was born into one of those communities where the divide between reality and mythology was ambiguous. This was the time before mechanisation and a time when the countryside was alive with colourful individuals whose physical shape was moulded by the land. It is these elements - the rural society, the physical shape of country people, and the magic of the Welsh Cob - that fire my imagination.”
His son Meirion’s work is quite jewel like, Impressionistic in style, using a stunning palette of subtle colours to paintings reminiscent of those by Vuillard. Meirion has been a professional painter since giving up teaching ten years ago and has exhibited widely in Welsh galleries. Recently, he was the subject of a TV programme documenting the creation of a publicly commissioned mural.
The Father and Son Show runs for one week only during Hay Festival, from Sunday, May 29 to Sunday, June 5, at the Lion Street Gallery in Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye.
