HERITAGE BUILDINGS - Sunday is the first open day this year when the public can visit heritage buildings restored by The Village Alive Trust, including the recently renovated grade II-listed pigscotts at White Castle Farm, Llantilio Crossenny. The stone pigscotts are a rare surviving example of once common buildings used by farmers and rural dwellers to rear pigs. The bacon products would be home cured and used to feed the family in the days before freezers and modern food processing methods.

White Castle Farm is situated close to White Castle, which is a feature of the Three Castles Walk along with Grosmont and Skenfrith castles. The pigscotts can be viewed between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday, or on July 10, September 4 and September 25.

Other restored listed buildings which can be visited on the same afternoons are St Cadoc’s Church, Llangattock Lingoed; Great Trerhew Barn, Llanvetherine; the Well House at New Inn Farm, Cross Ash and Cwm Farm Cider House at Llangattock Lingoed.

Teas will be available at the church and Great Trerhew. Stout footwear is recommended for some sites. The locations will be signposted off the B4521 Skenfrith to Abergavenny road and full details, including grid reference numbers, can be found at villagealivetrust.

org.uk. The Village Alive Trust has been instrumental in restoring farm buildings through grant aid projects involving Monmouthshire County Council, Cadw, the Welsh Assembly, the EU and local bodies since it was formed by local residents in 2004. The group’s secretary, Rev Dr Jean Prosser, was also instrumental in a £600,000 restoration project to save St Cadoc’s Church at Llangattock Lingoed and was appointed an MBE for her conservation work.
