A firefighter has been found guilty of murder after attacking a man at a wedding party in Herefordshire.

Jason Anthony Halling, aged 29, of Firs Orchard, Bromyard, was found guilty of killing Kevin Smith by a jury at Worcester Crown Court today.

Halling was given a life sentence and told he must serve a minimum of 11 years.

He attacked the 47-year-old Bromyard father at a wedding party at Upper Sapey Golf Club on New Years Day last year.

Mr Smith died in a Birmingham hospital two days after the assault as a result of his injuries.

The court heard that the defendant was at the party because he is the brother of the bride and the victim was there because he was the uncle of the bridegroom. The family of Kevin Smith made this comment following the verdict.

"Kevin was a big part of our family and just one moment of madness has destroyed so many lives.

"He was very much a family man and a great father but unfortunately he will never get to watch his children grow up or meet his grandchildren.

"Kevin had a lot to give but the actions of that night mean his life was short lived. We feel as a whole family that justice has been done but sadly this will not bring Kevin back. We would like to thank West Mercia Police officers for their support and tireless commitment throughout the year.

"Today for us is not a day to celebrate or rejoice. However we must all be accountable for our actions and, at times, be prepared to pay the ultimate price for them. No court outcome will ever bring Kevin - beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend - back to us. Many lives have been destroyed forever by what happened on that evening. It should have been a time to celebrate a new beginning, a young family’s future, but it ended in a nightmare." Detective Inspector Alan Mardell, of West Mercia Police, said: "I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of Kevin Smith. I would also like to thank the golf course staff for their assistance in our investigation and I would like to praise the professionalism and dedication of my team which brought this matter to a successful conclusion."

•Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service would like it made clear that Jason Halling was not employed as a firefighter by their service at the time of the offence.
