WHEN an actor starring in a Hereford pantomime was struck down with illness alad- in management was there to help.

Courtyard Theatre chief executive Martyn Green was out Christmas shopping when he received a call from worried Aladdin crew members.

Just over two hours later he was on stage.

Despite not knowing the lines, he played the role of Emperor for nine performances and received great adulation from crew and audience alike.

“I was Christmas shopping at 11.20am when I was called,” said Martyn.

“By 12.30pm I was at the theatre and on stage by 2.30pm.

“I had to do the performances with a script in front of me but the audience were told that I was filling in.

“The costume had to be refitted and the dame had some fun with me on stage.

But whatever happens, the show must go on.

“There was some great feedback from the audience.

It wasn’t a huge part but was really good fun.”

Martyn also played the more minor role of a policeman in one earlier performance, also due to illness.

Although not used to being on stage he said acting was not completely alien to him as he has a performing arts degree under his belt.

Donations from audiences throughout the pantomime’s 70-plus shows will go to Ross-on-Wye-based charity Hope Support Services which helps children and young people who have been affected by a close relative being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

The show continues its run at the Edgar Street theatre until Saturday.
