SCHOOL NEWS - The first green day at Madley Primary School was funpacked and extremely informative.

Each class had a visitor to work with the children on their term’s topic but from an ecological point of view.Class R worked with Rachel Bailey from the Marine Conservation Society, class one with David Jones, the senior building control surveyor for Herefordshire Council and class two with Gemma Johnston on their sculpture project using recycled materials to make sculptures of an imaginary animal which will be entered into a competition at Bristol Zoo next week. Class three worked with Marie Wellings from the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and class four with Nick Bullock from Sheffield University on the deforestation of rain forests in Madagascar. Class five worked with Sophie Wright and pupils from Hereford Sixth Form College on the environmental impact of international sporting events and class six with Carol Powell from Re-Jigged of Weobley, each transforming a discarded article of clothing into something new. Classes R and 1 held a school parliament with Laura Blackwell and Kenton Vigus, the recycling officers from Herefordshire Council. They considered the importance of recycling and the personal responsibility involved.

The rest of the school held a school parliament with Philip Tamuno, the sustainability officer from Herefordshire Council. They investigated the importance of living and being part of a community which operates in a way that considers the needs of the planet in a long term way.

OPEN DAY - Find out what happens in your local primary school on Tuesday, from 9.30am to11.30am. There will be tours around the school (while classes are being taught) and grounds. The morning will be finished off with refreshments served in the school hall.
