SKATING - The friends of Knighton Primary School organised a fun skating day on an artificial ice rink at Knighton Community Centre. The event was well attended with sessions running throughout the day.

MARKET - Knighton’s food and craft market will be held at Knighton Community Centre on Saturday from 9.30am till 1pm. There will be a good selection of stalls including the TVEG environment group’s Zero Miles stall. In the lounge there will be an art exhibition by local artists Janice Barrett and Kathy Heinzelmann.

NEW SHOP - When Knighton Clothing closed its doors for the last time at the end of May the town wished previous owners Julie and Glynn Corfield a very happy retirement but at the same time felt it was losing yet another of the wellestablished businesses in the town.

Happily a new business called Strides is opening at 22 Broad St tomorrow (Friday).

CONCERT - A concert for summer will be held in St Edward’s Church, Knighton, with the Montgomeryshire Ladies’ Choir and guests starting at 7pm on Saturday. Entry is £6 on the door, including refreshments.

ON A SUMMER’S DAY - There will be a floral art demonstration by Kevin Gunnell, a leading UK floral designer, in the church hall, Knighton, on Thursday, July 15, starting at 7.30pm.

COFFEE MORNING - A coffee morning at the home of Bob Wright in Knighton raised more than £100 for St Edward’s Church restoration fund. Mr Wright thanked everyone who came to the event and supported him in any other way. Raffle winners were June Ruff, V Astbury, Peggy Cadwallader, Neil Warrington, Vera Wood.

SCOUT ASSOCIATION - The Radnor Area Scout Association AGM was held at the Scout hut in Presteigne recently.

At the meeting were group representatives, area officials and Jill Gloster, chief commissioner of Wales. The committee remained unchanged, led by chairman Paul Kenyon. Jill Gloster presented an appointment to Scout leader certificate to Yvonne Glover- West and a ‘nights away’ permit to Heidi Lewis of Glasbury Beavers.

BARBER GETS AWARD - Malcolm Beddoes, a traditional barber from Knighton, has been awarded the Hairdressing Council Master Craftsman Diploma in hairdressing by Sally Styles, registrar of the council and editor of Hairdresser magazine. Malcolm, known locally as Mac, has been a barber in Knighton since 1966 and registered as soon as the scheme started.

Mac and his wife Sue were recently invited by the Hairdressing Council to have tea with other hairdressers at the Houses of Parliament.

BROWNIE GET TOGETHER: The First Bucknell Brownies will be closing as the pack has been unable to recruit a new leader. A special reunion will be held from 6pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday for anyone who has ever been a Brownie, helper, Guider or had any connection with the Bucknell pack, for reminiscences and light refreshments.

CARNIVAL PRINCESS - Chloe Gillum, aged 16, is Knighton Carnival’s Princess for 2010. Chloe’s name was drawn out by Emmerdale actor Richard Thorp. Chloe, who lives in Knighton is in the sixth form at John Beddoes School, Presteigne, and has just sat her AS level exams. She will be staying at the school to do her A-levels next year and then hopes to go to university to do paediatric nursing. Chloe’s interests include music, reading, swimming and computing. Chloe has recently won the Welsh young persons volunteer of the year award for her work as a young leader with Knighton Rainbows, Presteigne and Norton Community Support and other charities.
