A Hereford man is launching a support group for middle-aged homosexuals.

Howard Hyman believes the future is bright for his Autumn Rainbow support and social group.

More than 10,000 people in Herefordshire could be gay or lesbian according to national government figures.

But the older generation didn’t grow-up in today’s society, and many were persecuted because of their sexuality.

Autumn Rainbow – which also welcomes bisexuals and transsexuals – is aimed at the middle and older people age range.

Mr Hyman says the group will be run by likeminded people who understand the issues that members have faced.

The 63-year-old knows that some prejudices still exist.

“I’m not doing it for myself, I’m doing it for all the people out there who just want to reach out,” said Mr Hyman.

“We feel this group is needed as many of us grew up in a mainly hostile society. People are still attacked today.”

Mr Hyman claimed that many like-minded people were concerned about prejudices affecting future care and housing.

Autumn Rainbow aims to cover Herefordshire and its borders and could hold meetings around the county.

It is supported by Herefordshire Voluntary Action and an official launch date will be announced once enough members are confirmed.
