THE Hay Festival may be known for its genteel nature but for one moment this year it seemed as though chaos might break out.

Simon Green performing under the guise of Bonobo had attracted a sizeable crowd who came to listen to his dance-friendly tunes.

The only problem was that he and his band were in an arena full of seats and the young audience had little intention of sitting still.

As soon as the first song started, a group of teenagers got up and moved their way to the front of the stage. They were joined by others until the first 10 rows plus gangways were packed with bouncing bodies enjoying the music.

A few older members of the crowd made the opposite journey to sit down at the back of the tent as Bonobo delivered a musical journey featuring trip-hop, jazz, and soul.

The security guards did arrive but, after taking a quick look, decided against attempting the impossible job of returning everyone to their assigned seat.

Andreya Triana joined the group as their new vocalist and her strong and deep voice gave extra meaning to songs from the band’s first album Days to Come.

Tracks from Bonobo’s new album Black Sands followed featuring yet more genres like dubstep and two-step which kept the people on their feet for a gig that was not designed for seating.
