HEREFORDSHIRE'S rich heritage of mills is to be celebrated for the first time.

Nine mills in the county are to be opened to the public to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

The mills of Herefordshire are among more than 300 water and windmills throughout the country taking part in a weekend of festivities.

Herefordshire has not been involved in the initiative before, despite the county being at the forefront of the campaign for natural and locally produced food.

National Mills weekend is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14.

The mills open on Saturday, May 13 are: Cowarne Mill, Much Cowarne; Rowlestone Mill, Rowlestone and Hergest Mill in Kington.

On Sunday, May 14, Arrow Mill, Kingsland; Mortimers Cross Mill, Lucton; Risbury Mill, Risbury; Court of Noke Mill, near Staunton on Arrow; Staunton Mill, Staunton on Arrow; Clodock Mill, Longtown, Rowlestone Mill, Rowlestone and Hergest Mill at Kington will be open to the public.

There will be an admission charge at Mortimers Cross Mill in Lucton but otherwise, visitors will be asked to make a donation or a entry will be free.
