Hereford Municipal bowed out of the National Association of Public Golf Courses Hawtree Mixed Four-somes when the city club were beaten 3-1 by Thornbury at the Racecourse.

The home team of five mixed pairs opened briskly when Terry Robinson chipped in Sharon Helps' drive on the fourth for a birdie two and they went on to notch the first Hereford victory three up.

Max Birtles birdied the first for the Severnsiders in the match against Shaun Chambers and Averil Magee and went on to post the visitors' first win two up.

Harry Magee and Jenny Wildman got off to a flyer for Hereford by going two up after five holes but could not sustain their effort and lost three down.

Home captain Colin Morgan and Pam Williams battled well to halve a hard-fought match, but Chris Wearmouth and June Cowell were beaten, leaving Thornbury the winners.

Hereford players had the consolation of an Easter egg each - a present dished out by the visitors on the 10th tee.

n Burghill Valley mixed section's presentation of the Vaughan Trophy, a winter accumulator, was made after a fun competition day.

A countback was needed to decide the winners of the ladies' Coronation Foursomes stableford with Annette Mansie and Jan DuCros taking the honours over Marilyn Howard and Rita Morris after both pairs finished with 37 points.

n Herefordshire GC lady captain Glynne Hall began her year in style by winning the ladies' April medal with a nett 70.
