Three local youngsters were stars for a day at a charity soccer match with actors from Hollyoaks and Cornation Street.

Sisters Mia Alford, 10, and Rhian Alford, 13, from Colwall, and Joseph Cotton, aged seven, from Much Marcle, were team mascots at the event on behalf of Leukemia Care.

The youngsters braved snow, hail and rain, watched by a crowd of 3,000 fans at Worcester City's St George's Lane ground on Sunday.

Afterwards, Joseph's mum Janey said: "They really looked after us. It was wonderful."

She said Joseph, who was mascot for the Corrie team with Ben Lane from Hereford, usually went to bed too early to watch the soap.

However, she and husband Simon were fans and enjoyed seeing Joseph run on to the pitch with team captain Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw in the TV soap.

Joseph, a pupil at Much Marcle Primary School, supports Chelsea and plays for Ledbury Swifts' under-7s team.

Mia and Rhian were mascots for the Hollyoaks team.

"It was really, really good," said Rhian.

"I was a bit nervous but more cold. It was freezing."

The youngsters won the chance to appear at the match in a radio competition. They were given the football strips they wore as a souvenir, mingled with the stars, had pictures taken and collected autographs after the game.

The Hollyoaks team, which included captain Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson, and Chris Fountain (Justin Burton), won the match 5-0.

The event raised more than £15,000 for Leukaemia Care.
