Newent will probably not be getting a third chemists shop, because two already exist.
The dispensing panel of West Gloucestershire NHS Trust has been considering a proposal from Lloyds Pharmacy.
But Newent mayor Fred Passant said: "If we understand it correctly, because of the rural nature of Newent, the panel has decided that there is no room for another chemist in town."
Newent has one chemist at the health centre and the Kevin Hope Pharmacy, Broad Street.
