HEREFORD United's director of football Graham Turner has continued to rebuild his squad for the forthcoming season with the signing of former Yeovil striker Adam Stansfield.

The 25-year-old, who is 5ft 11in, created quite a stir three seasons ago when he signed from Western League Elmore and scored 16 goals for Yeovil that term, culminating in a man-of-the-match performance in the FA Trophy final when he scored the Glovers' second goal against Steven-age Borough.

In the first game of the 2002-3 season, however, he suffered a broken leg against Gravesend & Northfleet and missed the remainder of Yeovil's promotion campaign.

Restored to fitness the following year, Stansfield was often a peripheral figure in the Glovers' first football league season but in seven starts and 24 appearances as a substitute he still managed to score six times making his final Yeovil tally 22 goals in 68 appearances.

"I can well recall his pace, mobility and willingness to run in behind defenders," said Turner. "There's the hope that he might form a good partnership with David Brown although there's also a challenge there for Danny Carey-Bertram. There's certainly a precedent for young players really coming good in their second season here - you only have to look at Rob Purdie last year."

Turner may have to begin a search for a new goalkeeper, however, with the news that current number one Matt Baker is considering offers from Division Two or, more properly now, under the league's re-branding, League One clubs.

Baker did no harm to his reputation when he kept a clean sheet playing for the England National Game Xl against a United States USL representative team in Charleston, South Carolina last week.

Baker made one particularly fine save, a 27th minute tip-over from Marco Ferruzzi.

The Bulls' keeper was joined in the side by central defender Andy Tretton and last season's top scorer Steve Guinan.

"Matt said he would let me know by Friday what his decision is," said Turner. "But I've already made inquiries about alternatives if he decides to leave. I also hope that we shall have filled the coaching position by early next week."

Almost 1,000 supporters have taken advantage of the 'early bird' discount on season ticket purchases, almost double the amount sold at this stage last year.

"There are a lot of first-time season ticket buyers and a lot of first time supporters who came and had a look at the end of last season, liked what they saw and decided to stay with us," said Turner.
