STEVE Guinan's superb scoring form this season has earned him another honour.

Hereford United's 29-goal top scorer has earned a first call-up to the England National Game Xl in next month's Four Nations tournament.

England National Game Xl manager Paul Fairclough, the current caretaker-coach at Barnet, has named Guinan in his squad along with regular selections Matt Baker and Michael Rose.

United defender Andy Tretton and midfielder Rob Purdie have been named in a 12-man contingency squad, selected as cover in the event of injury to or unavailability of members of the 18-man main squad.

Baker will have to beat off competition from Worcester City's Danny McDonnell for the goalkeeping berth, while Rose will need to edge out the impressive Morecambe left-back David Perkins to start in defence.

Vying with Guinan for striking roles are Luke Rodgers (Shrewsbury), Roscoe d'Sane (Alder-shot) and Giuliano Grazioli (Barnet).

The contingency squad has largely but not exclusively been selected from younger players, as Fairclough explained.

"In the contingency squad we have selected players in the main who have played in under-23 internationals and not let me down at all," he said.

"We are looking for a combination of physical and mental toughness in our players, consistency in form - which is where someone like Andy Tretton has deserved to be considered - and the ability to do something special."

Former Hereford player Jake Sedgemore, who is now at Shrewsbury, is also included.
