BROMYARD'S wheelchair tennis player Janet McMorran and her doubles partner Lucy Shuker, of Somerset, were both honoured at WheelPower's 10th annual British Wheelchair Sports Awards at Reading.

Britain's top two ranked wheelchair women players, McMorran and Shuker, won lifetime achievement and individual female achievement awards respectively, while another tennis star, Anna Tarkowski, was named junior female of the year as the sport came away from the gala awards dinner with multiple honours for the third successive year.

McMorran was presented with the prestigious lifetime achievement award for a career which has included seven national singles titles and 21 international titles.

The Herefordshire player has been at the top of the sport for over 15 years and is the only female wheelchair tennis player to have contested all four Paralympic Games since it became a full medal Paralympic sport in Barcelona in 1992.

In 1990 McMorran was the only female player to take part in the very first British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships and had to compete against the men.

While the event has gone from strength to strength to become one of only four tournaments on the global NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour to have Super Series status, the equivalent of Grand Slam, McMorran herself has continued to show tremendous ability and determination to stay among the world's best players.

She has been as high as number six in the world in singles and in 2005 has continued to excel.

She won the latest of her seven national titles in May and has spent most of this year with the British number one ranking she has held for most of the last 15 years.

It has been another great year internationally, especially in doubles competition, where she has built up a successful partnership with Shuker.

McMorran told the master of ceremonies, BBC Sport's Paul Dickenson: "I haven't finished yet but I am definitely leaving the London 2012 Paralympic Games to the youngsters."
