THE history of Hereford could be written on its streets - and set in stone - under the latest multi-million pound makeover plan for the city centre.

This plan, which is out for public consultation, goes to ground making street names and historical features part of the paving. Contrasting surfaces and textures would define who goes where in High Town and what to see.

Lights may even be embedded into the paving to show the way, while the Old House is seen as an "oasis" where - with its own little green - calm can be found amid the bustle.

Mood lighting would set the tone of the city by night.

The plan has been put together by Hereford architects RRA, working with Owen Williams, consultants for Herefordshire Council.

Earlier this year the Hereford Times revealed how Hereford-shire Council was adding a third of a per cent to this year's 4% council tax rise to cover the cost of work in High Town.

That would raise £200,000 and enable the council to borrow £2 million from local government funding sources - a sum paid back as a budget commitment over the next 10-15 years.

The plan shows what the city could get for that money.

Garry Thomas, design consultant with RRA, said the options on show stripped back the streetscape to show-off features that make High Town Hereford's "historic core".

Forgotten features like "lost" medieval doors get a new look in, and the street layout would draw the eye to age-old architectural features from the first floor up, said Mr Thomas.

An RRA study of movement through High Town showed an obvious need to clear away "clutter", he said.

The plan is on display at the Old House until Saturday (October 29).
