THE story goes that Donna Steele, who takes the lead in the UK touring production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, stepped in for Amanda Holden in the West End, and soon had people booking to see her.

In classic showbiz fashion she stepped up from the chorus and received great reviews.

Her gutsy quality shines through, as well as her talent, and fits like a glove the yearning-to-be-savvy quality of the young Millie Dillmount, who undergoes a transformation from country bumpkin to 1920s flapper when she arrives in New York.

The next hour and a half is a razzle-dazzle rollercoaster ride of Millie's induction to the Big Apple and sub-plot kidnapping capers.

There are some great musical numbers (as you would expect) and some show-stopping choreography and scenery, not to mention great costumes - this is a grade A musical in every respect.

Leslie Joseph is in her element as hotelier Mrs Meers, with sinister intentions regards her young waifs, ably supported by her partners-in-crime Ching Ho (Yo Santhaveesuk) and Bun Foo (Unku).

Other strong character parts are played by Nicola Blackman (Miss Flannery) and Grace Kennedy (Muzzy Van Hossmere) but there are lots of strong voices, and great characterisation.

For guts, glamour and a good night out you will not be short-changed.

Thoroughly Modern Millie runs at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff until August 20. To book call 08700 40 2000 or visit www.wmc.org.uk
