AN enthusiastic audience greeted the Berkley Salon Ensemble last Thursday in the Courtyard theatre for a performance that marked the end of another successful season promoted by the Hereford Concert Society.

The series has included a number of excellent workshops with the artists and talented young people from across our region.

The Berkley Salon Ensemble is a group of musicians from the renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra who enjoy playing light music from the early 20th century to the present day. They also include some jazz and a splattering of 'pop' classics in their programming.

One could not fail to appreciate the enjoyment these excellent musicians took from performing such a repertoire; the audience definitely enjoyed itself.

There were some especially dazzling wind solos played by Mark O'Brien (clarinet) and Andrew Lane (piccolo). O'Brien enchanted us with his performance of Beeny Goodman's Air Mail Special, with its exciting rhythms and jazz tonality. Andrew Lane showed his nimble and light technique in Brewer's The Lark's Festival.

The evening wasn't just about spectating. Armed with song sheets, the audience roused itself by singing along to various numbers including a medley The Gay 90s.

It was a daringly unconventional evening to the Hereford Concert Society's season.
