leading members of Brom-yard's community were recognised at the town's seventh annual Distinguished Citizen's Awards.

Winners and their families were among 80 guests at the Falcon Hotel, Bromyard, when they were given their certificates.

Town mayor Gill Churchill said: "Nominations are made by members of the public at the start of the year and a special town council committee looks at the nominations and makes the decisions."

Among the people recognised with awards were:

Richard Coghlan, former head of St Richards' School, Breden-bury. He allowed many groups to use the school over the years. He is vice-president of Bromyard Rugby Club and a long-standing member of Bromyard Wind Band.

Mary Smith moved to Brom-yard in 1982 and has become a leading member of Bromyard Floral Club. She teaches floristry and is also deeply involved with Bromyard Gala and the WI.

Maureen Jones has raised thousands for local children with cancer, the town doctors' surgery fund, Victoria Eye Unit Surgery fund and other good causes.

Martin Ganderton, who taught at the old grammar school and Queen Elizabeth High School, served the town council for 33 years as clerk and councillor and is currently chairman of the choral society and twinning association.

Joan Dauncey has been involved with the folk festival, the twinning association and the archery club, but she and husband, Peter, are best known as founders of the town crier competition, She also served on the town council for many years.

Vera Powell has been involved with the Hospital League of Friends, Edwyn Ralph Village Hall and Bromyard Bowls Club for many years. She also provides transport for local people and has raised over £25,000 at weekly bingo sessions.

"These are all people who have done a great deal for Bromyard, said Mrs Churchill.
