THE league table position of Nuneaton Old Edwardians does not reflect the standard of rugby that they have been playing this season.

Ledbury 5pts, NUNEATON OLD EDWARDIANS 42pts

They have had narrow defeats to most of the top sides and travelled to Ross Road to prove it.

Ledbury were still not at full strength but there are signs of recovery from the injured players.

The game began poorly for Ledbury and within a minute the visitors were ahead after the most incredible bounce of a rugby ball.

The writing was on the wall that it wasn't going to be Ledbury's day and a second try was conceded five minutes later and converted to make the score 12-0.

The next 20 minutes saw Ledbury settle down and start to play some decent rugby with the try of the match coming from a break out of defence by Matt Williams, who handed-off to Sam Scholefield. He threw an overhead pass to Tukia Muli who put Chris Stokes in at the corner.

Unfortunately, Chris Stokes limped off and Sam Scholefield left the field with a back injury straight after the try.

Ned Mawlby was absolutely outstanding in defence, making his larger opposite number rush and panic when he got the ball.

Ledbury's achilles heel, the scrummage, then started to take its toll and Ledbury were shunted back time and time again. Keith McCulloch was given an uncomfortable time by a veteran prop forward, who had been around the block a couple of times, and the scores started to come.

Without a platform to work behind, the Ledbury backs were living off scraps and even their superior speed was not enough to break down a well-drilled defence, who were always coming forward.

The game was put beyond reach within the first quarter of the second half with another converted try and a penalty.

The scrummage remained a problem for the remainder of the game.

The game was sponsored by Indian restaurant Raduni, on The Homend.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Ledbury are at Old Leamingtonians.
