Hereford became the first team to take any points off Cardiff University this season when they held the Gerrard West of England and South Wales League Premier 3 leaders to a 1-1 draw.

Cardiff took the lead in the first half when a disputed short corner was converted with a well-worked routine.

But Hereford were quickly back on level terms when Chris Weale took the ball into the Cardiff D and Colin Amos fired home from a tight angle.

After the interval, both sides created chances with Ian Gwilliam playing well in the Hereford defence to earn the man of the match award.

Towards the end, Hereford were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty stroke when skipper Amos slid the ball past the goalkeeper but then had his feet taken away from under him as he tried to shoot.

The umpire, however, saw no offence and allowed play to continue.

Leominster went on a goal spree in North Division 1 when they hammered visiting Cwmbran 8-3.

The North Herefordshire club opened the scoring after just five minutes and went on to dominate the first period, racing into a 4-0 interval lead through Rob Goodman, Josh Watkins, Jonathan Mumford and John Morgan.

Goodman and Watkins each scored again shortly after the interval, serving to increase Cwmbran's frustration which eventually led to one of their players being sent off for five minutes.

Leominster took the opportunity to increase their lead with further goals from Morgan and Mumford before easing off in the closing stages to allow the visitors to pull three goals back.

Skipper Dan Little struck twice as Hereford 2nd notched a 3-1 away win over Gloucester City 4th in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire 1.

With Pete Duggan and Richard Wood controlling midfield, Hereford had the better of the first period and were unlucky not to go in front when Pete Edwards and Richard Jones hit a post in quick succession.

Hereford continued to press at the start of the second half and made the breakthrough when Richard Brown earned a short corner from which Edwards found the net.

Edwards then set up a chance for Little who turned deftly in the D to reverse flick the ball into the roof of the net. The Hereford captain followed up by smashing home his second following a one-two with Brown before Gloucester pulled a goal back towards the end.

Ross-on-Wye are still in second place in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire 2 after making hard work of their match with Cheltenham 5th before emerging with a 6-3 success.

For the first 10 minutes, Ross, who were seeking a big win to take them to the top of the table on goal difference, looked as if they were all set to achieve their aim when Phil Evans' opener was followed by two more strikes from Adrian Williams.

But Cheltenham, who were without a point after three matches, profited from a mistake by Edward Peck to cut the deficit and then scored again with a neat shot to make it 3-2.

Only a determined goal-line save by Tom Walton prevented an equaliser before Ross regained their momentum with Andy Cross extending their lead before the interval.

After the break, Williams went on to complete a hat-trick and skipper Andy Ridgway rounded off the win with a sixth goal.

l Leominster retained top spot in the Shropshire Hockey Association under-15 Badgers League with a 6-0 win at Ludlow.

Matt Styles led the way with a hat-trick with the other goals coming from Nick Evans (2) and Chris Connop.
