THIS year's Ross-on-Wye Horticultural Show was a milestone in the horticultural society's history - a 70th birthday celebration.

To mark the occasion, several divisions featured classes on the 70th birthday theme, with the Mrs E Radford Bowl going to Ross Floral Society for their entry in the 'Happy 70th Granny' group section.

As befitted a 70th birthday show, gardening guru Reg Moule was on hand to open proceedings, present the prizes and answer competitors' horticultural queries throughout the afternoon - some even brought plants and shrubs in their search for expert advice.

Musical entertainment was provided by Ross Town Band and refreshments and plant sales proved as popular as ever.

Main prizewinners included Mrs Bridget Forsdike, who won the Members' Cup for the member winning most points in show; Mrs Anthea Knight, George Nicholls Cup for the exhibitor winning most points in show; Mrs Esther Simpson, J Kirk Cup for Best Exhibit in floral art and the Tinsley Trophy for highest points total in floral art.

In the children's divisions the Rosswyn Challenge Cup was awarded to D Champness as the boy with the highest points total and the Bob Ollis Challenge Cup to Catrin Morris as the girl with the most points.
