Buckingham Town 1 Westfields 0

UNITED Counties League side Bucking-ham gained some measure of revenge for an FA Vase defeat 19 years ago with a single-goal success over Westfields.

Paul Burton shot wide and Scott Jackson headed powerfully but just off target for Westfields in the early stages before Buckingham scored the decisive goal on 32 minutes. Junior Fairbrother received a cross from the left and turned well to fire past goalkeeper Jon Pugh.

A good Jon Hill tackle prevented Fairbrother from increasing the home side's lead but Mark Davis was unlucky not to level after the break when he blasted a shot against the woodwork. Kevin Jinks was also unfortunate with a 20-yard drive which flashed inches wide.

FORMER Kington Town hot-shot Mark Davis wasted no time in getting off the mark for his new club when he headed Westfields in front after just a minute of their opening pre-season friendly at Gloucestershire County League side Ellwood.

With the visitors piling on the pressure, it was no surprise when Paul Burton set up a chance for Derek Craddock to extend the lead after 20 minutes with a shot from 10 yards.

In the second period, Westfields gave debuts to new signings Mark Davies from Wellington and Chris Jones from Malvern and the changes soon paid off when good approach work by Burton allowed Nick Welch to fire in goal number three.

Substitute Carl Preece who had come on as a late substitute then made his presence felt in the closing stages when he rounded things off just before the end with a fierce drive from just inside the penalty area.
