Hereford architects Jamieson Associates have collected a Royal British Institute of British Architects award at a gala dinner in London.

The accolade was received for the refurbishment of a mediaeval private home near Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, and included a six-metre structural glass cube bridging the gap between two original buildings.

Angus Jamieson said: ''It was pleasing when the judging panel referred to the work as an exemplary illustration of contemporary architecture within a historic context."

The judges added: ''Despite the constraints of a rural setting and the mediaeval fabric of the original building, it set new standards for the extension of an existing building.

"The connecting spaces are drenched in natural light and become places of significance and delight, allowing the surrounding landscape to enter the building."

The building will now compete with other 2005 award winners for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize, which Channel 4 will broadcast on Saturday, October 15.

In 1994 Jamieson Associates received an RIBA Award for the Viscount Portman Centre for Art and Technology in Castle Street, Hereford, for Hereford Cathedral School. In 2004, they received an award for The Moat, Castle Green, for Hereford Cathedral Junior School.
