SLOW play can be the bane of golf competitions - and there will be no time for it at a Kington Juniors' fund-raiser next month.

Eighteen juniors, plus club professional Andy Gealy, will be playing against the clock in Kington's first sponsored speed golf challenge on the Bradnor Hill course.

Each junior will play the 18-hole course as quickly as they can and in the fewest strokes achievable, with the overall score being decided on minutes taken added to the golf score, eg shooting an 80 in 90 minutes would produce a score of 170. Sponsors are invited to guess the winning total for a £50 prize.

The world record for 18-hole speed golf is 111 and that was by an adult athlete, playing off a low handicap, on a flat parkland course in the United States.

The juniors will be up bright and early for a 6.30am start to the challenge on Tuesday, August 16, and organiser Rob Pritchard said: "With the rarefied atmosphere up at Kington, the juniors are not expecting to break the record, although Gealy seems confident!"

l There are still a few spaces available for the Kington Junior Open and Daily Telegraph qualifier on Saturday from 11am. Late entries should phone the pro shop on 01544 231320.

The junior section's fund-raising continues with a Texas Scramble next Wednesday with a shotgun start at 11.30am. Around 20 teams have entered but there are still a few spaces available at £20 per team.
