A SUPERB unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 246 between Peter Bailey and Tom Austwick brought Herefordshire a memorable win in their opening ECB Under-17 County Championship match at Colwall.

With 50 of their allotted 114 overs already gone, Herefordshire had slipped to 158-5, chasing the visitors' imposing 401-8 on an excellent batting pitch.

But Austwick and Bailey went on to dominate proceedings to the extent that the home county cruised home with 12 overs to spare, Bailey finishing with an unbeaten 146 while Austwick contributed 75.

After winning the toss and inviting Lincolnshire to bat, Herefordshire had also reduced the visitors to 158-5 before their fight-back began through R Hardy, who crashed 26 fours and four sixes in his 178, sharing a stand of 209 with R Dannatt (69) as the total increased to 401-8 declared.

Leg-spinner James Cutler (3-113) and Bailey (2-58) were the most effective Herefordshire bowlers.

Herefordshire lost Sam Griffiths (10) before the close of the first day but Mike King (26) and Tom McLellan (54) began the re-trenchment which was carried on in spectacular style by Bailey and Austwick.
