IT looks as if the first Hereford Farmers' Market will be during May but the venue has yet to be agreed.

The city's High Town is the favoured site for the monthly market but whichever venue is chosen the Herefordshire Council has to be fully satisfied that the area is suitable for a variety of requirements, including vehicle access.

Diana Palmer, Food Link co-ordinator for markets in the county, said it was hoped that the High Town site would meet the council's approval. "It is an excellent site because it will bring people into the city centre and encourage them to stay longer. It would be a great advertisement for Hereford produce and would give farmers a platform.

"The market needs to be in a place where people will see and use it and be aware of what is available locally."

She said it was unfortunate Hereford was lagging behind other towns in the county that had established their markets on a regular basis. To have opened during the April holiday would have been ideal.

Brecknock Farmers' Markets want to hear from anyone interested in having a stall at their markets this summer in the market hall in Brecon. The first market is on Saturday, June 10, followed by markets on July 8 and September 9. There will also be a stand at Brecon Show in August. For details, ring Tricia Jones, market co-ordinator, on 01874 624437.
