THE Herefordshire Millennium Volunteers project has been celebrating its first birthday after a successful year of activities.

More than 100 young people have joined the scheme, with many of them gaining certificates for giving up between 100 and 200 hours of their time.

The 16-25-year-olds have supported a number of activities, including coaching football to juniors, writing newsletters, running youth clubs, publicising charities and helping elderly people.

Project facilitator Cath Davies said: "Young people get a lot of negative press, but the majority don't deserve to be tarred with the same brush.

"I meet many young people with a huge range of skills and willingness to contribute to their communities. People should support and encourage them to do so. They do a great job and are much appreciated."

Volunteers can gain experience for their studies or future careers or just for personal achievement.
