A HIKE that is more like a mountaineering expedition takes to the hills on May 13.

'The Black Mountains Challenge 2000' has been organised by the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, who turn out in all weathers to save lives and are on call 365 days a year.

Anyone wishing to take part will need good navigation and hill skills. There is a choice of 43km, 27km or 16km walks/runs, each starting and finishing at Llanthony Priory.

15 summits

Between them, the various routes take in 15 summits over 660m, all set within the breathtaking scenery of the Black Mountains.

The average time for walkers describing themselves as fit is 10 hours for the 43km route.

The event is intended to raise money for essential medical or rescue equipment.
