Cannock 0 Wellington 2

PETE Wallace grabbed a brace as Wellington gave a fine performance to establish a two-goal advantage in the first leg of this Banks's Brewery West Midlands Division 1 Cup semi-final at Cannock.

Although Wellington controlled the early play and created more chances than their Division 1 North opponents, there was an element of fortune about their opening goal. A good run by Mark Cross finished with a fine shot which was deflected and then rebounded to Wallace who slammed it home from close range.

Five minutes after the break Wellington extended their lead when a splendid move involving Mark Fish, Willie Lindesay and Gareth Roberts put Kenny Styles clear down the right.

He outpaced the defence to swing over a perfectly weighted cross which was headed home by Wallace at the far post.

Wellington resisted any attempts by Cannock to get back into the game with a well organised defensive display for the remainder of the tie.

Bewdley Town 1 Bromyard Town 6

Bromyard gave a dominating display to hit their hosts for six and keep up the pressure for the Division 1 South title. With five games to play they trail Wellington by two points with two games in hand.

The visitors took an early lead when centre-forward Chris Jefferson forced the ball home from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

Bromyard kept up the pressure and created several chances, with Carl Morgan and Garry Nott finishing well to put them three goals clear at the interval.

Play continued in the same vein after the break with Bromyard always in control and threatening to overwhelm Bewdley.

Darren Gwynne and Jason Westmacott stretched their lead before Bewdley reduced the deficit with a breakaway goal.

With time running out, Jefferson claimed his second goal to complete a comfortable victory.

l A clash of fixtures has meant that the probable Division 1 South championship decider between Wellington and Bromyard has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 26 at Bromyard.
