END OF ERA - The March meeting of Clehonger Parish Council was an historic event as it signalled the end of an era. From April 1, Clehonger Parish Council no longer represented the interests of the Belmont estate in Hereford as this area had a parish council of its own -- Belmont Rural Parish Council. This meeting represented the last meeting before the May elections and the last meeting of the parish council in its present form. Councillors expressed regret that Jean Harris, who had served as a parish councillor for 24 years and was one of the longest-serving parish councillors, had decided not to seek re-election. She was thanked for the council work done throughout the 24 years. Changes to the parish council also mean that there would be a vacancy for a new parish clerk when the present clerk left on June 30. Anyone interested in the position should contact the vice-chairman, Councillor T Edwards, on 01432 370175.

The meeting held at the Eastholme Community Centre, saw a good attendance by members of the public, as well as nine parish councillors and the clerk. There was a lively discussion on the proposals of the Belmont/Haywood Management Plan which generated positive comments and expressions of concern by parishioners fearful their peaceful neighbourhoods might be damaged by some of the proposals. A proposal to renew planning permission for a temporary mobile classroom at Clehonger VC School resulted in considerable debate and the parish council was reminded local residents had been strongly opposed to the mobile classroom when it was first installed last year. Concerns were expressed about an application, under consideration by Herefordshire Council, for further development in the area. The proposed Great Western Way Transport Scheme was discussed and comments would be sent to Herefordshire Council. Councillors were concerned about the potential opening of footpath CH7 to bus traffic, which linked the Belmont estate with Hunderton. Members felt the safety of pedestrians would be an issue. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 10, at 7.30pm at Clehonger Village School. This will be the annual parish council meeting and would incorporate the annual meeting of electors.

MEDIEVAL SUPPER -- A grand event was held when those known as peasants, monks, minstrels and crusaders ate huge amounts of medieval food. Everyone sang medieval songs and also did a broom dance. The committee worked hard on the event and decorated the hall to look like a medieval castle.

ANNUAL MEETING -- St Peter's Church will be holding its annual meeting in the village hall on Tuesday, evening, April 18, starting at 8pm. The church tower has been repainted and some dampness treated. It is now hoped the heating system can be tackled. It is also hoped a bookcase or table can be purchased to be placed at the rear of the church and used for children's activities and books.
