STIFF security measures have been stepped up at a Herefordshire supermarket in attempts to stamp out the thieves.

This action follows a 'steep rise' in thefts of alcohol from the Tesco store in Orchard Lane, Ledbury, said Sergeant Bob Wilson of the town's Police.

And the CCTV on the drinks aisle, plain-clothed store detectives and uniformed security guards has already paid off with the arrest of a 24-year-old local man for theft.

Two Hereford men are also assisting Ledbury Police with inquiries over the theft of a considerable number of bottles of alcohol.

Sgt Wilson said: "Measures are in place to deter those that want to try stealing and to detect those who do steal."

He expects further arrests until people realise they are being observed and stop stealing. Anyone caught faces arrest and prosecution.
