HEREFORDSHIRE youngsters claimed both gold medals in the Shropshire and Herefordshire Junior Championship played at the Herefordshire Golf Club.

Jonathan Devereux, of the host club, claimed the title with a two-under-par total of 138 (70, 68) after beating Joe Ferguson (Sapey) in a play-off over four holes.

Gregg Morgan (Belmont) took the under-16 gold medal with 144 (74, 70).

There was an exciting finale to the championship with Devereux and Ferguson posting identical two-round scores, and Devereux edging out Ferguson by a single shot when he covered the four play-off holes in level par.

Devereux, Ferguson and Morgan were joined in the eight qualifiers for the twin counties matchplay by Elliot Shaw (Burghill Valley) and Darren Richards (Kington).

n Leominster's John Hill and Tony Wathen have won a trip to Ireland to play in the Millennium International Pairs Classic 2000 in October.

They won their club's qualifier with a combined score of 38 stableford points in a better-ball tournament to earn their all-expenses paid trip for the huge semi-final round.

The tournament takes place over eight courses in Ireland and the top five from each course go through to the grand final.

Hill and Wathen won the qualifier on a countback from Ian Fraser and Cyril Jennings, 38, while Bill Mackay and Bill McGrath, 37, were third.

n David Park (Burghill Valley) posted a six-under-par total of 282 (71, 69, 69, 73) for a share of 22nd place in the Novotel Perrier French Open, at Le Golf National, Paris.

He picked up an early birdie in his final round to move to a challenging eight-under par, but slipped a couple of shots to finish some two shots adrift of the winner, European number one Colin Montgomery.

n Curtis Cup player Becky Morgan will be one of the many top women golfers playing during County Week 2000 at Ross-on-Wye from Mon-day to Wednesday.

It is the second year of this prestigious event with Welsh counties Mon-mouthshire and Glamor-gan playing against Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

The competition is open to spectators to view women stars. The foursomes matches tee-off from 8.30am and the singles from 1.30pm.
