Bishop's Frome wood turner Mike Abbot is to demonstrate his traditional skills at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh Park, in Warwickshire.

Mr Abbot, who owns his own piece of woodland near Ledbury, will be hard at work in the Country Lifestyle area at the four-day show, from July 3.

This is being sponsored by NFU Countryside, in partnership with the Royal Agricultural Society of England.

Mr Abbot, who makes chairs using a traditional pole-lathe, said: "Pole-lathing nearly died out because industrialisation gradually made the job redundant.

"When I started there were just half a dozen of us hanging on, compared with thousands doing it a century ago."

Mr Abbot dedicated his career to rediscovering and teaching the skills of the woodland craftsman and applying them to the modern world.

His expertise in traditional skills recently earned him an invitation to Prince Charles' Gloucestershire home, Highgrove. There he met the prince and was able to put the case to influential landowners for good coppice management and the need to preserve ancient techniques.

The craftsman, who lives at Greenwood Cottage, is the author of Green Woodwork and a member of the Marches Green Network.
