YOUNG cricketers across Herefordshire are in line to benefit from a new national scheme which is offering cut price helmets to clubs and schools.

The England and Wales Cricket Board, in conjunction with their new play-cricket.com web-site and BBC Sport, are offering three junior-sized helmets for just £10 to clubs and schools. There will be 20,000 helmets distributed nationwide.

The initiative will help to make helmets more widely available in the wake of ECB safety guidelines, which cover the use of such head protection for batsmen and wicket-keepers under the age of 18.

Previously, the prohibitive price of helmets was causing concern, especially for hard-up schools and smaller clubs, in a struggle to comply with the ECB ruling.

Any club or school can apply for the offer through the www.play-cricket.com web-site, or alternatively contact the ECB on 0207 432 1200.
