MEMBERS of the cast of 'The Understanding' a play by Angela Huth, were concerned when they were shown a recent article by the author in The Telegraph.

It revealed that, just before the first night in the early 1980s, Celia Johnson, who was to play opposite Sir Ralph Richardson, died. As in the play Celia Johnson's character has to declare that she is about to die, it cast a momentary doubt over the role.

Scottish play

Was 'The Understanding' another 'Macbeth'? The Shakespeare play that is always known in the theatre as 'The Scottish Play' to ward off its reputation as an unlucky production?

Joan Hughes, who takes the Johnson role in the Presteigne production is, however, totally unworried and confident that all the cast will be fit and ready for the performances next week. 'The Understanding' is not at all sombre, it is thought provoking but with many touches of humour and romance.

This production features several well-known players. Playing the young lead is Elizabeth Francis, a striking Olivia in the recent school production of 'Twelfth Night' in Kington.

This combination of experienced and young talent promises an enjoyable night for the audience and for more productions in the future.

Tickets for 'The Understanding's' two performances on Monday and Tuesday, February 19 and 20 can be bought at the door or from The Coffee House in Presteigne. The performances begin at 7.30pm in Presteigne Assembly Rooms.
